Forum AWO Indonesia successfully organized a Certification and Competency event for the Animal Welfare Officer (AWO) competency unit, held from April 23 to 25, 2024. The event took place in two strategic locations, namely Polbangtan Cinagara and the Bubulak Slaughterhouse (RPH), in collaboration with the Indonesian Animal Husbandry Professional Certification Institute (LSP – PI). A total of 15 participants from various prominent institutions in Indonesia took part in this important event, aimed at enhancing the competencies of professionals in animal welfare.

The Certification and Competency program was designed with a highly structured agenda, including Oral Competency Tests, Field Competency Tests, and direct Observation in the field. During the Oral Competency Test, participants were evaluated on their theoretical knowledge of animal welfare, including procedures and best practices to be applied in various field situations. The Field Competency Test then provided participants with the opportunity to demonstrate their practical abilities in handling various aspects of animal welfare, such as safe and effective animal handling, in accordance with international standards.

One of the key components of the agenda was the Observation session, where participants conducted direct observations in various related sectors, including the loading and unloading of animals, pen management, the use of restraint boxes, and slaughtering procedures at the Bubulak Slaughterhouse. This Observation provided invaluable practical insights for the participants, allowing them to see and understand the application of animal welfare principles in real-world situations. This not only deepened their understanding but also ensured they had the ability to apply high standards in daily practices.

The success of this Certification and Competency event is reflected in the proud results, with all 15 participants being declared competent by LSP – PI. This recognition confirms that the participants have met the competency standards required to become qualified Animal Welfare Officers capable of upholding the responsibility of maintaining animal welfare in Indonesia.
Forum AWO Indonesia would like to express its appreciation and gratitude to the Indonesia Australia Red Meat & Cattle Partnership for their full support in organizing this event. This support was crucial in ensuring the implementation of a high-quality and standard-certified program. Through this event, it is hoped that participants will be able to implement the knowledge and skills they have gained to improve animal welfare across various sectors in Indonesia. This marks an important step in strengthening the national livestock industry while promoting more ethical and responsible practices in livestock management.
