FAWO Training : Animal Welfare dan Traceability Training for Bogor supply chains

Animal welfare is an issue that is increasingly gaining widespread attention worldwide. Animals living in healthy and well-maintained environments have positive impacts not only on themselves but also on society as a whole. As the Eid al-Adha festival approaches, the Forum AWO Indonesia has taken a progressive step in improving animal welfare by organizing animal welfare training for the beef supply chain in the Bogor region. The animal welfare training in Bogor took place on June 15, 2023, with the aim of raising awareness among livestock owners, slaughterhouse workers, and related professionals about the importance of providing proper care and adequate protection to animals. The training also aimed to provide insights into the basic principles of animal welfare, recognizing signs of discomfort in animals, and best practices in animal husbandry until the animals are processed at the slaughterhouse facilities.

The animal welfare training in Bogor covered various topics, including understanding the monitoring of animal welfare programs and ESCAS (Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System). The materials were delivered by Brisca Febria and included explanations of the basic principles of animal welfare, good treatment of animals, and regulations that pertain to the beef supply chain, especially for Australian livestock. The second session focused on Handling Livestock at Depots and was presented by Deni Julianto. This session targeted those involved in handling cattle at depots or feedlots to ensure proper care for all livestock. Lastly, the session on Handling Livestock at Slaughterhouses and the slaughter process was delivered by Ali Rahman. This material is crucial as it involves the final stage of an animal’s life before slaughter, requiring adherence to procedures and animal welfare guidelines.

The training was delivered through a combination of presentations, group discussions, and hands-on practical sessions. Participants gained in-depth knowledge on how to provide good care and protection for animals in various situations.

Inclusive Training: GEDSI in FAWO

GEDSI, which stands for Gender Equality Disability and Social Inclusion, is a movement aimed at understanding the urgency and concepts of gender and social inclusion. It also aims to promote gender and social equality strategies for women in the livestock industry. Dr. Ir. Siti Andarwati S.Pt., M.P., IPM., ASEAN Eng., presented the GEDSI materials, discussing the role of women in the livestock industry, particularly in the beef cattle sector. The recent Animal Welfare and Traceability Training held in Bogor was attended by female participants working in various sectors related to beef cattle farming, including exporters, feedlots, government agencies, and slaughterhouses. The involvement of women in the livestock industry is highly appreciated and exemplifies the implementation of GEDSI in every conducted agenda.

Observations at UPTD RPH Kota Bogor

Slaughterhouses often face challenges in ensuring animal welfare during the slaughtering and handling processes. Practices that neglect animal welfare can cause unnecessary suffering for the animals. Therefore, animal welfare training is essential to enhance understanding and behavioral changes towards better practices in this industry.

The animal welfare training in Bogor targeted slaughterhouse workers, depots, and feedlots in the Bogor region. The training aimed to raise awareness and knowledge about the importance of animal welfare in the slaughtering and handling practices. Its primary goal was to teach the fundamental principles of animal welfare, recognize signs of stress and discomfort in animals, and promote more humane and effective handling techniques.

The animal welfare training for slaughterhouse workers in Bogor covered various aspects relevant to their work conditions. Topics discussed included the basic needs of cattle, the importance of proper facility maintenance, good handling techniques, as well as knowledge about breeding and handling injured animals. The training was conducted through presentations, interactive discussions, and hands-on practical sessions to provide comprehensive understanding.

It is hoped that the animal welfare training in Bogor will create a significant impact in improving animal welfare. The training participants, including animal owners, farmers, and animal health officers, have enhanced their understanding of animal needs and how to provide appropriate care.
