Hybrid Seminar/Webinar Forum AWO Indonesia

On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, the AWO Indonesia Forum successfully organized its first Hybrid Seminar/Webinar with the theme “Implementation of Animal Welfare Principles for the Sustainability of the Beef Industry.” The event was conducted both online and offline, with the offline session taking place at the Aston & Convention Center TB. Simatupang Hotel, while the online webinar was held using a Zoom link provided by the AWO Indonesia Forum to registered participants. This Seminar/Webinar involved speakers delivering their presentations offline, while online webinar participants could follow the presentations through the Zoom online broadcast.

The online webinar participants came from various backgrounds and institutions, including students, professors, field practitioners, academics, and workers from the Australian livestock industry, such as AWO personnel, slaughterhouse staff, exporters, feedlot staff, halal slaughterers, government officials, and others. The offline seminar had 29 participants, while the online webinar had 144 participants. The level of enthusiasm shown by the participants in this Hybrid Seminar/Webinar organized by FAWO was remarkable, as the initial target for online webinar participants was 100 people.

The event began with a welcome speech delivered by Drh. Neny Santy Jelita L, the chairperson of the AWO Indonesia Forum. The second speech was given by Mr. Petrus Widyantoro, IA Program Manager – RMCP. Both Drh. Neny and Mr. Petrus expressed their hopes for a smooth event and active participant engagement from start to finish. It’s worth noting that this event was sponsored by AniMark, Kemin Industries, PT. Arsi Indo Graha, PT. Agroveta Husada Dharma, PT. SHS International, and PT. Gentala Jasma Ayu.

The first presentation was delivered by Drh. R.D. Wiwiek Bagja, an Animal Welfare Practitioner/Expert and former Chair of PB. PDHI during the 2006-2014 period. Drh. R.D. Wiwiek Bagja delivered a very interesting presentation on the History of Animal Welfare Implementation in Indonesia, with the following key points: understanding the legal basis for implementing animal welfare in Indonesia and applying animal welfare principles.

During the second presentation, Drh. Ismau Alim took the stage. Drh. Alim (as he is addressed) discussed the Current Challenges in the Livestock Industry related to Animal Welfare and Biosafety. The topics covered included building knowledge among farmers about the threats of LSD and PMK diseases to animal welfare, preventive measures against the spread of LSD and PMK in farm environments, and appropriate handling of animals affected by LSD or PMK according to animal welfare standards. This is highly relevant to the current situation experienced by the majority of livestock industry stakeholders in Indonesia, as outbreaks of FMD and LSD are affecting several farms, making it important to provide updates on the current industry situation.
